On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Eden Center—the heart of Little Saigon in Falls Church, VA—hosted a memorable screening of the acclaimed film “NEWWAVE,” directed by award-winning filmmaker Elizabeth Ai. The film vividly explores the profound impact of 1980s new wave music on first-generation Vietnamese Americans, capturing stories of identity, fashion, and community.
This historic evening at Eden Center was more than just entertainment; it represented a cultural celebration deeply connected to the Vietnamese diaspora’s shared experiences. The event kicked off with a vibrant book signing and meet-and-greet session with Elizabeth Ai, author of “New Wave: Rebellion and Reinvention in the Vietnamese Diaspora.”
Following a warm welcome from event organizers, attendees enjoyed an immersive film screening at Eden Center, renowned as the largest Vietnamese commercial hub on the East Coast and a beloved community gathering place.
The highlight of the night was an insightful Q&A session with Elizabeth Ai, allowing the audience to delve deeper into the film’s themes. Ai emphasized the importance of new wave music as more than just entertainment—it served as a “safe space” and a significant cultural anchor for the Vietnamese-American community following the challenging journey of immigration.
Douglas Ebenstein, president of Capital Commercial Properties and owner of Eden Center, is proud to host such culturally significant events. Douglas continues to honor the legacy of his late father, Norman Ebenstein, who originally envisioned Eden Center as a vibrant community hub that not only provides economic opportunities but also preserves and celebrates Vietnamese culture and heritage.
After the event, attendees joined an energetic after-party hosted by DJ Les Talusan at Eaton Hotel’s Wild Days DC, marking a joyful conclusion to the inspiring evening.
The success of “NEWWAVE” and its reception at Eden Center highlights the continued importance of supporting arts and cultural events that reflect and uplift immigrant communities and their histories.
Eden Center will continue hosting events that foster community connection and celebrate Vietnamese-American culture, including an upcoming mural unveiling in May. Stay tuned for future updates!
